Dead Buddhist Monk Is Alive

Moscow, Russia -- “Exhumation of the body of Hambo Lama Itigelov took place September 10 th, 2002 on the territory of cemetery near the city of Ulan Ude (Russian Federation). He died and was buried in 1927 and the exhumation was performed in presence of relatives, officials, and specialists”.

This was the information that appeared in Russian mass media regarding Buryat Lama who was exhumed from the grave in the beginning of the 21 st century. The grave contained a wooden box and there was a sitting Buddhist lama in ‘lotus’ pose. His body was preserved as if it was mummified, however it was not. Soft muscles and skin, folding joints. The body was covered with silk clothes and fabric.

Hambo Lama Itigelov is a real person quite well known in Russian history. He studied in Anninsky Datsan (Buddhist university in Buryatia, nowadays there are ruins only) and obtained degrees in medicine and philosophy (on the nature of emptiness), he created an encyclopedia of pharmacology.

In 1911 Itigelov became a Hambo Lama (the head of Buddhist church in Russia). During the period from 1913 till 1917 he participated in social actions of the Tsar, being invited to 300-year anniversary of Romanov’s house, opened the first Buddhist temple in St. Petersburg, and Nikolai II gave him St. Stanislav award on 19 th of March, 1917.

During the First World War Itigelov created and inspired the organization called “Buryat brothers”. He was helping the army with money, meals, clothes, medicaments, he also built a set of hospitals with lama doctors helping wounded soldiers. For that he got St. Anna award and others.

In 1926 Itigelov advised the Buddhist monks to leave Russia, since ‘the red teaching was coming’ (Itigelov himself never left Russia). In 1927, being 75, he told lamas to begin meditation, since he said he was preparing to die. Lamas did not want to perform this meditation because Itigelov was still alive. Thus, Itigelov began to meditate by himself, lamas joined him and soon he died.

Ititgelov left a testament where he asked to bury him as he was, sitting in lotus pose in the cedar box on traditional cemetery. It was done. There was also a statement, where he asked other monks to exhume him after several years. (This is the exciting point – this means he knew that his body would be preserved). This was done in 1955 and in 1973 by Buddhist monks but they were scared to tell everybody about this, since communist regime did not leave any space for religion in society. Only in 2002 the body was finally exhumed and transferred to Ivolginsky Datsan (a residence of today’s Hambo Lama) where it was closely examined by monks and, which is now more important, by scientists and pathologists. The official statement was issued about the body – very well preserved, without any signs of decay, whole muscles and inner tissue, soft joints and skin. The interesting thing is that the body was never embalmed or mummified.

Two years passed. Itigelov’s body is now kept open air, in contact with other people, without any temperature or humidity regimes. How Itigelov keeps this condition, nobody knows.

This is the ONLY KNOWN AND CONFIRMED CASE OF IMPERISHABLE BODY throughout the whole world. Embalming and mummifying is well known among different nations and peoples – Chili (Chinchora), Egypt mummies, Christian Saints, communist leaders and others. Some bodies were found in permafrost, however when they contacted with oxygen atmosphere they perished within several hours.

However, there are descriptions of such things in Buddhist texts, but there are no confirmed examples. Well, now there is.

For two years after the exhumation of Itigilov’s body it does not perish nor decay, no fungus, no negative things happen to it. Itigelov said before he died that he left a message to all peoples on Earth. This message contains no words. Now it is our turn to understand it.

  1. This is actually common in Budhist monks. You see, when they want their bodies preserved, monks usually feed off only of nuts, peanuts and such to preserve the body after death.

    4. Salt preserves by removing moisture, so this is not the case here as he has not desiccated, the tissue is plump and moist. I don't know what the answer is, but he seems to have mystified the scientists according to the above link.

    1. But even if the wording of the article is technically inaccurate, aside from signs of more advanced decay like the missing nose, that body could pass for being less than four hours dead.

No matter how you slice it, that's not normal.

  7. the basic principle behind this is generating heat into body .. once you are in control of maintaining temperature of body .. and the one who is able to do it will know lot of causalities in different temperature modes .. for keeping your body for long term purposes, killing of a certain bacteria is required, which basically triggers the degeneration process .. at certain temperature the bacteria or the related organisms are killed .. if you are able to judge the time of your death you can maintain that particular temperature before you die and immediately that degree of body heat will transfer into that amount of body cold (since you have died - body will become cold) .. and that coldness freezes the other organisms to degenerate ..
also the purpose of mummification is for sole purpose .. the scholars know at each age that in the cycle of time a particular instance comes when the so called genetic manipulation and regeneration technology comes up .. at that time a lot of evil shit is resurrected .. the good mummies come in handy for the good side
So this is time cycle basically .. over the years .. we all will get to see all this drama :)

No, it's not. Throughout history, there have been Catholic and Orthodox saints known as "incorruptibles" who have exhibited exactly the same phenomenon. Just do a google search on incorruptibility. Hundreds of examples will pop up...

  13. Actually it is not the only confirmed case in the world... the body of Russian folk hero Ilya Muromets, who died before 1300 A.D., is in a monastery there in open air and shows no signs of decay. There is even a picture on Wiki...

Instead we have a poorly partly preserved corpse - google "Pickling"

  25. there is the case of Bernadette who saw the Virgin Mary who died in 1879 who has not decomposed at all, externally or internally.

  27. If there are several competing theories, logic would suggest that the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.
When he died the monk's body was packed in salt, which would be the simplest explanation of why the body has been preserved.
Furthermore, Buddhists using this as a proof to non-believers of a god seems antithetical to the inward looking nature of Buddhism and the path of self-realisation.

  30. THATS NOT ACCURATE, GO READ ABOUT THE INCORRUPTABLE SAINTS IN THE CATHOLICISM AND IT PROVES THAT THIS IS NOT THE ONLY IMPERISHABLE BODY EVER FOUND. AND GO READ THE REPORTS FROM SECULAR DOCTORS ABOUT THE SAINTS THAT THEY INVESTIGATED AND MANY OF THEM AFTER LOOKING AND OBSERVING THE BODIES HAD MASS CONVERSIONS.

  34. The monk did not die. he was not killed. he simply left the body, without the trauma which fear of dying, and the chemicals it produces which causes decay occurring....One day he might just return to it.!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well, Bernie, from "Weekend at Bernies" didn't decay either, if I remember the movie correctly. So it can happen.... :)

  36. However, miracles aside, we already have ample evidence that Itigelov’s current “incorrupt” condition is perfectly consistent with an updated form of sokushinbutsu, performed by a clever medical scholar in accordance with tradition.

  37. His Vessel was pure of thought and diet, This monk was Toxin, parasite and Bacteria free because of his diet, life style and his body does not rot because there was no foreign bacteria in his body that could take over and eat his lifeless body! You see while your alive you fight off decease and bacteria every day, but when you die the Bacteria and toxins in your lifeless body take over!

  38. He entered a state of meditative coma; slowed his heartbeat down to one beat every 10 minutes. Brain activity, breathing slows down proportionately. This is so slow it is considered dead, since instruments will pick up no activity. I'm not sure his soul still inhabits the body, but the body remains alive. How it maintains its muscles to keep it erect is that at that rate, energy consumption is virtually zero, though in a couple of hundred years it will begin to sag a little.
