The Solway Firth Photo & The Men In Black

On 24th May 1964, Jim Templeton, a fireman from Carlisle in the North of England, took his young daughter out to the marches overlooking the Solway Firth to take some photographs. Nothing untoward happened, although both he and his wife noticed an unusual aura in the atmosphere.

There was a kind of electric charge in the air, though no storm came. Even nearby cows seemed upset by it.

Some days later Mr Templeton got his photographs processed by the chemist, who said that it was a pity that the man who had walked past had spoilt the best shot of Elizabeth holding a bunch of flowers. Jim was puzzled. There had been nobody else on the marshes nearby at the time.

But sure enough, on the picture in question there was a figure in a silvery white space suit projecting at an odd angle into the air behind the girl's back, as if an unwanted snooper had wrecked the shot.

The case was reported to the police and taken up by Kodak, the film manufacturers, who offered free film for life to anyone who could solve the mystery when their experts failed.

It was not, as the police at first guessed, a simple double exposure with one negative accidentally printed on top of another during processing. It was, as Chief Superintendent Oldcorn quickly concluded, just "one of those things... a freak picture."

A few weeks later Jim Templeton received two mysterious visitors. He had never heard of MIBs: the subject was almost unknown in Britain then. But the two men who came to his house in a large Jaguar car wore dark suits and otherwise looked normal. The weird thing about them was their behavior.

They only referred to one another by numbers and asked the most unusual questions as they drove Jim out to the marshes. They wanted to know in minute detail about the weather on the day of the photograph, the activities of local bird life and odd asides like that.

Then they tried to make him admit that he had just photographed an ordinary man walking past. Jim responded politely, but nevertheless rejected their idea, at which they became irrationally angry and hustled themselves into the car, driving off and leaving him. The fire officer had to hike five miles across country to get home.

  1. There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

  4. So what would I be expected to think? That the statements made my the author of this story are indisputably sound? This despite no citations whatsoever in terms of the claims about the followup by Kodak, and so on. How, in other words, am I supposed know that the photo posted here is not a photoshop piece of shit, which in all truth, I suspect it to be? I am hoping that if I take more time to look at this report, it will be identified by the author to be fiction, for in terms of the format, that is all it amounts to.

    1. I don't think it's a photoshop. There was this in depth book about alien/ufo sightings and abductions tbat I used to have when I grew up. I believe this book was from atleast the 80's and this picture was already in it at that time.

Unfortunately I don't recall the exact title of the book, but I remember it being part of a whole series which all dealt with freaky/mysterious subjects.

    2. Or you could take it with a grain of salt & move on instead of saying the same thing plenty of people have also said, "LACK OF EVIDENCE." No need to be such a sour spot. Furthermore, since it is Sooooo upsetting to you, how about you do some research into it, instead of just reading one article on one website that was simply sharing a story with you. Grow up!

  7. THIS IS FAKE! It had other names back then, Not "Photoshop." Before computers, photo manipulation was achieved by retouching with ink, paint, double-exposure, piecing photos or negatives together in the darkroom, or scratching Polaroids. Results are similar to photoshop.

An early example of tampering was in the early 1860s, when a photo of Abraham Lincoln was altered using the body from a portrait of John C. Calhoun and the head of Lincoln from a famous seated portrait by Mathew Brady – the same portrait which was the basis for the original Lincoln five-dollar bill. 1. Then I'll start by not believing you just because you say something is correct or not.

  8. This clearly looks like a man with his back toward us, hand on hip looking over the hill. He is on a hill, hence the odd angle. But that is clearly his back.

  10. Apparently, it's supposed to be Jim's wife in the background, walking in the other direction. But... I'm not so sure - Jim was supposed to have taken 3 photos (all within a matter of seconds) and it was the middle picture in which this "spaceman" appeared, but if it's just Jim's wife, how can she appear in one photo and suddenly disappear in the next?

  12. Why would you get into a car with strange men who only refer themselves by number? They didn't show id? The story sounds ridiculous
