8 Sleeping Positions & Their Effects On Health

In what position you sleep most often? It turns out that this very important question. Getting enough sleep is the most important thing – but did you know that how you sleep can also impact your health?

Sleeping on your back with your arms at your side is generally considered to be the best sleeping position for spine health and it’s good for your neck, too, as long as you don’t use too many pillows.

That said, back sleepers tend to snore more than those in any other position and sleep apnea is strongly associated with sleeping on the back.

Let’s take a look at eight common sleeping positions and what they do to your body:

  1. I am none of those. On my left side or stomach, both arms out and up at 90 deg angle, right leg out and down at 90 deg angle. This position makes it impossible for me to toss and turn at night which I am apparently notorious for but it is also the way I enjoy sleeping the most. I have acid reflux so I pop a zantac before bed so I do not wake up with a flaming chest. Which would put less strain on the organs during digestion as I lay on my side.

  2. As a stomach sleeper, they really should promote a pillow you can comfortable be face down on, like a massage bed. I'd pay for that, rather than develop an underbite.

  3. You're welcome on my massage table any night, it may cost you, but you'll sleep great and I'll massage you asleep :-)

  4. I didn't see the position I sleep in which is on side (either) with arms close to body in front of me in a V, bottom leg straight, top leg resting on mattress and bent at knee.

    1. That's the exact same way I sleep! and the only way I can sleep. Obviously we're not alone and there should be a category for us.

    2. I've slept that way all of my life. Most relaxing "going to sleep" position there is.

    3. That's how I sleep too

  5. Sounds to me like someone just made this up using their imagination. Have there been any studies? None are cited here.

  6. I sleep in a teapot position.. on my front with left leg bent 90 degree and my left arm up and hand under pillow or near face. My right leg is straight and my right arm is bent as if ob my hips... teapot.. wtf

  7. I sleep always naked with a bed sheet cover either lying in the back mostly or in the side position, sometimes like to cuddle a pillow.

  8. When you sleep on your back you should NOT put pillow under the arch of your back like the article states. you should be able to barely slide your fingers under the arch of your back.

  9. I fall asleep on my back, slightly raised by pillows, right hand up above my head, left arm down beside my body. Then most of the night, I sleep in a position said to be rare... kind of a "K" position. On my left side, left leg straight, weight resting between left hip and tummy, left arm flung behind me, right leg up and bent to support and balance, right arm bent, resting on a pillow. A pillow alongside my back, and small pillow between my thighs, a pillow under my head. Lots of pillows!

  10. assumes you don't ever change position as you sleep. which I do.

  11. WEll It is hard to believe this means anything..I sleep in most of these positions only because I have joint pains issues that prevent me from sleeping too long in any position...So I just try to find the next position to get relief for a few moments..has nothing to do with personality type.

  12. I'm mostly a stomach-sleeper, but tilted lifted slightly to one side or the other. I have two older pillows in one case, and have one shoulder on the pillow also. My head is turned down on the edge of the pillow. BTW, I have near perfect posture with no back discomfort.

  13. I would say that this is pretty closed to being correct. I am a back and side sleeper.

  14. with Ive always slept majoritivly on one side, (left) on that side I have a larger breast if it had anything to do wh that ha.. and a more tired face but, I have had a lot of nerve damadge to that side so am trying to teach myself to sleep on the bac, but this causes back pain because my bum makes my back arch and its painful!! ~( i could fit a pilow under there! sciatica is terrible an wonder if fetus side sleeping on that side is affecting it! but cannot find a good sleeping position!! perhaps just strapping myself down haha

  15. Nobody has mentioned my sleeping position, which is on my back with my elbows out and hands resting on my chest.
As other posters have observed, though:
!. Most people change positions several times every night.
    2. Sometimes I sleep on my side (either), in the K shape, or slightly foetal. Occasionally i sleep sort-of on my front, but a bit on my side, in the classic 'murder victim' pose, with my arm under the pillow.

The most important thing? Listen to your body and do what it instructs.

  16. Hey – great blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a really nice platform you are using. I’m currently using WordPress for a few of my blogs but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?
